FIELD GUIDE
The story
A waitress nearly 20 feet tall, holding a pie, stands in the parking area of a family restaurant on Route 66 in Atlanta, Illinois. Route 66 News describes the town as the “Land of the Giants”, and Lumi the Pie Lady is one of its newest. She was installed on Friday, August 16, 2024, on the west side of the Country Aire Restaurant parking lot, which Route 66 News places on the 1947 to 1977 alignment of the highway, a short distance from Interstate 55.
The figure is a Uniroyal Gal variant of the Muffler Man type of roadside giant, which Route 66 News dates to the 1960s and 1970s. According to the town’s announcement, Mark Cline used the original model of the Uniroyal Tire Gal giants built in the 1960s by International Fiberglass Company to design and fabricate Lumi at his Enchanted Castle Studio in Natural Bridge, Virginia. She is dressed as a waitress, with an order pad, cat-eye glasses and a waitress cap. The firm Re-Giant installed her, as it did the Texaco Big Friend at the American Giants Museum.
