FIELD GUIDE

The story

Two Statues of Liberty look out from the roof of a Buffalo office tower. According to Visit Buffalo, the Liberty Building was built in 1925 as headquarters for Liberty Bank, which had been the German American Bank until its name changed after the First World War to remove any connection to that war's main enemy. To signal the bank's new image, the building was topped with three replicas of the Statue of Liberty sculpted by Leo Lentelli in 1925: two on the roof, one facing west and the other east, which Visit Buffalo says represent Buffalo's strategic location on the Great Lakes, and a third over the Main Street entrance. Only the rooftop pair remain; Visit Buffalo gives their height as 36 feet and says they are illuminated at night. The building is an office tower, so the statues are best enjoyed from the street.
