The story

Two large cat sculptures, nicknamed Leo and Leona, were reported in 2024 to be still standing at the roadside beside Highway 17 in Los Gatos. The Los Gatos Public Library's catalogue records that the pair were sculpted in 1922 by Robert Treat Paine to stand at the entrance to a private estate. The library records that the couple who built the estate commissioned them primarily to demonstrate the value of public art; the commissioner regarded them as "a sort of missionary work in culture in California" and refused to move them off the public road even when they were vandalised several times. The library describes the cats as symbols of the town today.
Local historian Alan Feinberg wrote in Los Gatan in February 2024 that townspeople nicknamed the pair Leo and Leona, that they had stood at the entrance for more than 100 years and were still visible when driving south on Highway 17.
