FIELD GUIDE
The story
Above the Route 1 traffic in Woolwich, Maine, a lobster far bigger than any on the plates below sits on a restaurant roof. Larry the Lobster is an inflatable figure on top of the Taste of Maine Restaurant, which bills him as the World's Largest Inflatable Lobster. The restaurant says he stretches more than 12 feet into the sky, weighs about 700 pounds and was crafted specifically for the restaurant. It also credits him with googly eyes.
He arrived for an anniversary. 94.3 WCYY reported in January 2018 that the restaurant, a long-standing Route 1 landmark, planned to put a gigantic inflatable lobster on its roof when it opened for the season to mark 40 years in operation. Q96.1 wrote in July 2025 that he was installed in 2018.
