The story

In Red Bluff, the bull that almost no one could ride and the cowboy who did are posed together in bronze at the front of the town's rodeo museum.

KRCR reported in April 2025 that a full-size bronze of 1987 world champion bull rider Lane Frost on the bull Red Rock was on display in front of the Red Bluff Round-Up Museum on Antelope Boulevard, days before that year's Round-Up rodeo.

Red Rock belonged to the Growney Brothers Rodeo Company. PBR records that after his 1987 title win the bull had 309 unridden outs and was to be retired, but John Growney thought another meeting between the two champions might cement the bull's place in history. They met seven times at rodeos across the western states in 1988, in a series PBR says was billed the "Battle of Champions"; KRCR calls it the Challenge of Champions. According to PBR, the bull got the better of Frost at Red Bluff and Clovis, California, before Frost rode him on 20 May 1988. KRCR places that ride at the Redding Rodeo and says the episode inspired the film 8 Seconds, in which Growney appeared. Frost died in 1989 after a ride at Cheyenne Frontier Days.

KRCR reported that the idea for the statue came on a road trip, when Growney asked why the town had no Red Rock statue. KRCR gave its cost as about $260,000; the Round-Up museum's page reports more than $380,000 raised in total. It was a Red Bluff Rotary project, funded through square dances, prime rib dinners, yard sales and sales of bronze miniatures of Red Rock.
