FIELD GUIDE

The story

A sculpture helped rename a plaza and give a city its logo. Alexander Calder's La Grande Vitesse, French for 'the great swiftness', stands in a downtown plaza surrounded by city and county buildings and has appeared on the city's stationery, street signs and garbage trucks.
The National Endowment for the Arts says that in 1967 the city, then building a new city hall to revive a blighted area downtown, was awarded a $45,000 NEA grant for a sculpture, and a local committee raised a further $83,000. The NEA describes it as the initial project of its Public Art Initiative and the first civic sculpture financed jointly by federal and private funds.
