FIELD GUIDE
The story
From 1988 until he abandoned the site in 2000, self-taught artist Kenny Hill built about one hundred cement statues of angels and other figures beside Bayou Petit Caillou in Chauvin, Louisiana. The National Park Service's preservation training centre describes about one hundred statues on nine round platforms along a meandering path, with many self-portraits and imagery that suggested the garden was autobiographical. The presentation also describes angelic figures and a psychological investment in the religious imagery. Hill was trained as a stone mason and bricklayer, and a brick tower was among the first elements he built.
According to a presentation hosted by the National Park Service, a Nicholls State University professor said the Kohler Foundation helped secure and preserve the site and gift it to the university, which built a visitor centre and studio across the street.
