FIELD GUIDE
The story
Tommy Fox's 32-foot sculpture "Jumbo-Wumbo Technico" was installed in 2020 as the centrepiece of the Chrysler Museum of Art's new sculpture park in Norfolk. The Richmond artist's work, dated 2020, anchors the park at the museum's entrance, at Brambleton Avenue and Yarmouth Street. Fox describes it as "a lofty whimsical tower" that uses colour theory and visual contrast to be bright, accessible and pleasing to all.
Virginia Living reported in March 2021 that the park had opened the previous autumn at the meeting point of Ghent, the NEON District and Freemason, and was designed as a southern gateway to the museum campus. The museum's own page records a ribbon-cutting on 31 October 2020. Museum director Erik Neil said the museum was excited "to install a bright and whimsical element for the community to enjoy", and that signage directing people to the museum from Brambleton Avenue had long been a priority.
