The story

Flin Flon, Manitoba, is named for a character in a novel, and, according to Travel Manitoba, a statue of him guards the entrance to the city. Travel Manitoba describes the 7.5-metre (24-foot) statue of Josiah Flintabbatey Flonatin, and says he depicts a dime novel character, adopted by prospectors in 1915, who gave the city its name.
The Manitoba Historical Society says the statue was erected in 1962 on a design by cartoonist Al Capp, and Travel Manitoba credits the design to American cartoonist Al Capp of L'il Abner fame. The Society says the character comes from the 1914 novel The Sunless City by E. Preston Muddock.
