The story

Escondido has a 22-foot-tall fibreglass sentinel holding a muffler. According to the Escondido History Center, the Joor Muffler Man has been a familiar fixture outside Joor Muffler and Full Complete Auto Service, on the corner of E. Valley Parkway and Juniper Street, for nearly five decades.

He belongs to the family of roadside giants known as Muffler Men, which the History Center describes as typically 18 to 25 feet tall and built to catch the attention of passing drivers. Escondido's example reportedly arrived in the 1960s after a trade-show discovery and was modified to hold an oversized muffler, a nod to the shop's work. The City of Escondido gives the height as 22 feet, in a note about 2013, and describes a pencil-thin moustache, blue eyes and a piercing gaze. A 2019 10News report called him 25 feet tall, so the figure's height depends on who is measuring.

The arrival date is also not fixed. The History Center's "nearly five decades" and its 1960s trade-show account sit uneasily with the city page, which, in a note apparently written during the COVID-19 pandemic, says he had been at the corner for 40 years.

What is consistent is the dressing-up. The city says he has survived various pranks and is known to dress as Santa in December, and in May 2013 city workers using a bucket truck fitted him with cycling gear for the overall start of the Amgen Tour of California race in Escondido. The History Center adds a jack-o'-lantern look for Halloween. In December 2019, 10News reported that the Santa suit had returned after vandals and rain had kept it off for years.

Queen Califia's Magical Circle Garden

Queen Califia's Magical Circle is the only sculpture garden in the United States by French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle, and was her last major international project, opened posthumously in 2003 in Kit Carson Park's Iris Sankey Arboretum, Escondido. The installation centers on an 11-foot-tall mosaic-clad sculpture of the mythical Queen Califia -- California's namesake figure -- astride a rainbow-colored bird creature, surrounded by a circular mosaic 'snake wall' and maze entryway approximately 120 feet in diameter and roughly 24 feet in height, plus eight additional large-scale mosaic sculptures inspired by California's mythic and cultural history.
