FIELD GUIDE
The story
Blue Earth, Minnesota, in Faribault County, has a fiberglass Jolly Green Giant. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine described him in April 2026 as nearly 60 feet tall, though the same piece also gives 55.5 feet, and MPR News and the Star Tribune say 55 feet. MPR News gives his weight as 8,000 pounds. Lill Robinson of the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce told CBS Minnesota in 2022, "Supposedly he weighs 8,000 pounds," and said his smile is 48 inches wide.
The statue grew out of a worry about traffic. CBS Minnesota reported that radio station owner Paul Hedberg realised Interstate 90 construction would reduce traffic to town, and that he "came up with the idea of a green, giant statue." MPR News notes that Hedberg had KBEW AM and FM in Blue Earth. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine says he campaigned to move a stretch of the interstate five miles closer to Blue Earth and raised the roughly $43,000 cost in about a week, with funding from local businesses.
