FIELD GUIDE
The story
A crushed red Solo cup, ten feet tall, is meant as a stop sign for single-use plastic. Jokester 2 is by artist Paula Crown, from her Solo Together body of work built around the crushed red Solo cup. According to her studio, it was installed at 95 NE 40th Street in the Miami Design District during Miami Art Week 2018, after the first Jokester made its debut earlier that year in Aspen.
The Aspen original was unveiled on the gondola plaza at the base of Aspen Mountain in June 2018. The Aspen Times described it as minibus-sized and quoted Crown calling the cup "a big red 'stop' sign". Her studio says the Miami version works the same way, as a large-scale piece meant to make people pause and ask what happens to all the plastic used once and thrown away. Crown told the paper she hoped to tour the sculpture after its stay at the base of Aspen Mountain.
