FIELD GUIDE

The story

The longhorn at the corner of East 4th Street and North Grant Street in downtown Odessa is a reminder that the oil town began as a cattle town. B93, a local radio station, wrote in August 2025 that the 10-foot rustic metal sculpture is one of downtown's most recognised treasures and that it pays homage to the early days of Odessa, when the town was known for cattle well before oil.
According to B93, the sculpture was donated to the city in 2010 in collaboration with the Heritage of Odessa Foundation. Its plaque reads "In memory of cattlemen who led the way". Sculptor Joe Barrington made it; Roadarch gives it as ten feet tall, welded steel and installed in 2010.
