The story

Douglas, Wyoming, has put a mythical animal at the centre of town. Travel Wyoming's page for Douglas invites visitors to stop for a photo with the eight-foot-tall jackalope statue in Jackalope Square, at 100 S 3rd St.
The town's claim to the jackalope rests on a taxidermy shop. A City of Douglas page reproducing a New York Times article quotes taxidermist Ralph Herrick saying that he and his brother Doug created the jackalope in 1934. Cowboy State Daily reported in 2023 that the town credits Doug Herrick with the first jackalope in 1939, and photographed a proclamation to that effect at the Douglas Railroad Museum and Visitor Center. The same report says Douglas trademarked the slogan "Home of the Jackalope" in 1970.
