FIELD GUIDE

The story

Tourism Nelson Kootenay Lake's listing describes Heron's Landing as a bronze and stainless steel sculpture by Jock Hildebrand (Kelowna, BC), filed under Public Art at Rotary Lakeside Park in Nelson, British Columbia.
The listing carries a first-person artist's statement, under Hildebrand's credit. In it, the sculpture is called a "referential sculpture" that "has been allowed a large degree of stylization", and the artist says he set out to "emphasize and exaggerate the inherent grace of form" of the species. The statement says the four bronze balls are meant to indicate the four cardinal points, and that the stainless steel portion is meant to separate the sky from the earth, reflect the sky and lift the heron from its earth-bound plinth.
