The Heidelberg Project is an outdoor art environment on Heidelberg and Elba Place streets in Detroit's McDougall-Hunt neighbourhood. Artist Tyree Guyton began it in 1986, turning vacant lots and houses into assemblages of found objects; Kresge says it is considered Detroit's earliest outdoor neighbourhood art space.

FIELD GUIDE
The story
A single street on Detroit's east side became one continuous artwork in 1986, and it has been argued over, demolished in part and burned ever since. According to the project's own history, artist Tyree Guyton returned that year to Heidelberg Street, where he grew up, and began cleaning up vacant lots with his grandfather and neighbourhood children. From the rubbish they collected he made an art environment that took in abandoned houses, lots, sidewalks and trees. The project was incorporated in 1988.
The Kresge Foundation describes it as an open-air gallery of discarded everyday items, shoes, dolls, stuffed animals, televisions, car hoods and clocks, surrounded by abstract faces, bright polka dots and messages, all painted by Guyton, and says it is considered Detroit's earliest, and at times most controversial, outdoor neighbourhood art space.
