FIELD GUIDE
The story
A 40-foot volcano stands at the centre of Hawaiian Rumble, a mini golf course on King's Highway (US-17) in North Myrtle Beach. The Myrtle Beach Sun News wrote in 2024 that the real attraction is the volcano in the middle, which erupts every 20 minutes. Visit Myrtle Beach repeated the 40-foot figure and the 20-minute flames in August 2025, and said a scene in the 1994 film Chasers, the last feature directed by Dennis Hopper, was filmed at the course, with a Navy transport van driving halfway up the volcano.
The course is the setting for the finish of the annual US ProMiniGolf Masters. According to the Sun News, it has hosted the tournament for 27 years, every October. WMBF reported in October 2024 that the Masters was first played in 1997, that year's field was a record 84 players across three courses for a $25,000 purse, and that it finishes with two rounds at Hawaiian Rumble. Association president Bob Detwiler recalled: "When we first started we only had 17 people show up."
