This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
Outside the original Happy Chef restaurant on US-169 in Mankato, Minnesota, a fibreglass chef statue holds a giant spoon. The Frederick brothers founded the chain here in 1963, and this is its last remaining restaurant; a motion-sensor voice was restored in 2018.

FIELD GUIDE

The story

The chef who once beckoned highway drivers into dozens of restaurants now stands at the last one. Minnesota Monthly reported in March 2025 that Happy Chef was founded in Mankato in 1963 by brothers Sal, Bob and Tom Frederick, and that the first location, outside town on Highway 169, is the only Happy Chef left. At its peak, it said, 65 restaurants dotted seven states.
Minnesota Monthly describes the fibreglass chef as 36 feet tall, in a full chef's outfit and holding a giant wooden spoon, a figure that drew customers from the highway. MPR News also gave 36 feet in 2018, while 98.1 Minnesota's New Country described the statues as 16 feet tall in December 2025.
