FIELD GUIDE
The story
Twenty-five feet tall, this Hanuman was carved from a single block of black granite in India and shipped to New York. The Hindu Temple Association in Hockessin, Delaware, founded in 1996, took delivery in January 2020.
According to a temple board member quoted by 6abc, the carving was done by shilpis, specialist artisans whose skill is passed from generation to generation; more than a dozen of them worked full-time for more than a year. India TV reported in June 2020 that the stone was worked in Warangal, in Telangana, and that the statue cost more than US$100,000 for construction and logistics. It went by ship to New York and then by flatbed truck to Delaware, where, 6abc reported, people walked it in procession from about a quarter of a mile away and a priest performed a welcoming ceremony.
