FIELD GUIDE

The story

A steel lotus flower that began on the Black Rock Desert playa was reported in 2022 to have moved to a college campus in Reno. Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) says Guardian of Eden, by Kate Raudenbush (whom TMCC described in 2022 as New York-based), debuted at Burning Man in 2007. The Nevada Museum of Art's collection record describes it as plasma-cut rolled steel and mixed media, 571.5 by 538.5 centimetres, and credits it as a gift in memory of a young family member. Burning Man Project lists it in front of the museum from 2007 to 2021 and later at TMCC.
TMCC reported in September 2022 a ceremony welcoming the sculpture to its Dandini Campus, near the Sports and Fitness Center. The college describes it as inspired by Hindu and Egyptian creation myth, Buddhist symbolism and the ancient Flower of Life, and quotes Raudenbush calling it "a physical reflection of the fierceness and beauty of our planet under threat". TMCC's 2022 report says it is on long-term loan from the Nevada Museum of Art.
