This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A 1,800-pound bronze grizzly bear statue, more than 10 feet long from nose to feet, stands near the main gate of Mercer University's Five Star Stadium in Macon as the bronze mascot of the Mercer Bears. Sculpted by Gregory Johnson of Cumming, Georgia (from 500 pounds of clay over roughly 150 hours, cast in bronze at the Eagle Bronze foundry in Wyoming) and donated by retired Belk department-store executive Irwin Belk, it was installed on August 3, 2015, depicted resting one paw on a rock and letting out a fierce roar, designed to complement an earlier, upright bear statue in Cruz Plaza.
