FIELD GUIDE
The story
Finding Greta Granit takes a short walk into the woods of Ninigret Park in Charlestown, Rhode Island, where a roughly 16-foot troll made of scrap wood sits among boulders. She is the work of Danish artist Thomas Dambo, who builds giant troll sculptures from recycled material around the world. Rhode Island Monthly reported that Greta and a second troll, Erik Rock, have been in the park since May 2024, and that three more trolls later completed a statewide trail.
Dambo visited the park in 2023 for a site visit and told the magazine he had an idea for an installation with some really big stones. Rhode Island PBS, reporting for WBUR, followed his team for three weeks as they built the two trolls. Dambo told the producer that Denmark has little exposed bedrock, so boulders suggested a basis for a fairy tale. According to Blue Dot Living, the head, fingers and feet were made in his Denmark workshop and shipped, while local volunteers made details such as Greta's necklace, strung from shells, bones and driftwood, with oyster shells donated by a local farm.
