FIELD GUIDE
The story
Grant Wood's American Gothic is the painting behind this work. Grounds For Sculpture's interactive map notes that a number of Seward Johnson's works are inspired by well-known paintings, including God Bless America, inspired by Wood's American Gothic.
The park's record dates the piece to 2012 and describes it as cast and painted aluminium and wood, 168 by 108 by 70 inches, in the collection of The Seward Johnson Atelier. It is listed at Peacock Run, site map number 708. The setting suits it: Grounds For Sculpture says it was founded by Johnson and opened in 1992 on the former New Jersey State Fairgrounds, as an extension of the Johnson Atelier.
