FIELD GUIDE
The story
Safety Harbor's nature preserve has a gnome 17 feet tall. Gnomeo stands at Folly Farm Nature Preserve, a 9.95-acre city park with gardens, walking trails, a playground and farm animals. A May 2025 radio report called the figure a must-see photo spot at the park's center, and ABC Action News, writing in March 2023, said he has feet the size of wheelbarrows and a head the size of a wrecking ball.
Gnomeo was a volunteer project of the City of Safety Harbor, the Safety Harbor Garden Club, sculptor Kumpa, who made the head, and builder Sean Carbery of CarCo Design. ABC reported that Kumpa has created giant sculptures for Disney and Nickelodeon. According to the Garden Club, the idea began when city recreation staff showed photos of Thomas Dambo's giant troll sculptures. The team chose a gnome to suit themes already established at the farm, and took the name from a play staged there the year before. Local artist Chris Dotson built a scale mock-up. The body is reclaimed lumber, while the club says Kumpa fabricated the head from foam and fiberglass, with treatments planned to make it look like the wood in the rest of the sculpture.
