FIELD GUIDE

The story

In Montréal, The Main refers to "our three-story orange sphere on Décarie Boulevard". The Main's article, by J.P. Karwacki and dated November 22, 2024, is titled "How Gibeau Orange Julep Became a Montreal Icon".
The restaurant's own history page and The Main both date the story to 1932. The Main says the story starts when Hermas Gibeau launched his signature drink, and the Orange Julep history page says he opened his first retail storefront that year on St Laurent Boulevard. The history page then describes "his 30ft sphere in 1947". It says that his "beloved Orange was expropriated for the new Decarie expressway" as the city was preparing for Expo '67, and that Gibeau "purchased a piece of land nearby at 7700 Decarie in 1964". It describes "his nearly 60ft 'Big Orange' in 1964" and says he "built what you see today as the Largest Orange Sphere in the World!" Those are the operator's own descriptions.
