Giant Yabby – Narrabri Fish Farm

Yabbies deserve the attention more than they usually get. They are freshwater crayfish found across the eastern inland, tough enough to survive in farm dams that dry out completely – they burrow down and wait, sometimes for years, until water returns. That resilience is why they are farmed at all, and why every child who grew up near a dam in inland New South Wales has caught them with string and a piece of meat.

They are also the counterpart to Western Australia's marron, which has its own giant at Kent River: the two crustaceans occupy the same niche on opposite sides of the continent, and yabbies introduced into Western Australian waters have become a problem for marron there. The catalogue's two crayfish monuments are, in that sense, on opposing sides.

Jacks Creek is south-east of Narrabri on the Namoi, in cotton and grain country on the Liverpool Plains edge, where the Murray cod are genuinely native and genuinely depleted.

Access is marked restricted because this is a working aquaculture business rather than a public site.
