The story

Beside State Route 110 in Napoleon, Ohio, a can of Campbell's tomato soup stands 33 feet tall and 33 feet wide, and it is a working piece of plant equipment. Ohio Magazine reported in 2024 that the can is a water reserve for the building's sprinkler system, and that it is visible from the road but sits behind a fence, about a quarter mile from the main entrance.

The soup is a late arrival to a long story. According to Ohio Magazine in 2015, Campbell's has had a presence in Ohio since 1938, when it began making V8 in Napoleon, and officials added a soup plant in 1957. The magazine named it as one of three US facilities canning Campbell's soups, the others being in North Carolina and Texas; in 2024 it again described Napoleon as one of three US factories still canning the brand's varieties.

The can itself was installed in 1989, during one of three additions to the facility, and can hold 200,000 gallons. A company representative told the magazine in 2015 that the label reads tomato soup as a nod to Campbell's roots in Camden, New Jersey: "Tomato soup was the anchor." Both Ohio Magazine pieces give the same playful measure of the tank: it would take 2,178,645 regular cans of soup to fill it.

In January 2025 Ohio's public radio news service, statenews.org, included the can among the state's attractions proclaiming to be the world's largest, alongside a 67-foot-long horseshoe crab in Hillsboro.

This is an industrial site rather than a roadside stop, so plan to look from State Route 110 and keep within the law and your own safety when choosing where to slow down.
