FIELD GUIDE

The story

As of May 2024, Coon Rapids, Iowa, listed a rotating ear of corn on Highway 141 that predates the town's current streetscape. In its public-art guide, the City of Coon Rapids called it a "historic rotating ear of corn" and a mainstay of the community "dating back to the Garst Seed corn company era". The city placed it at the west entrance to town.
The city says the ear was originally at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Highway 141 and was relocated in 2008 to make way for the "hybrid icons", three lighted silo-shaped beacons by artist David Dahlquist that mark the town's hybrid seed-corn history. Roadside America describes the corn as a "sometimes motorized ten-footer" next to the town welcome billboard, so the turning is not guaranteed.
