FIELD GUIDE

The story

According to the Village of Hines Creek, the village is known as the "End of Steel" and has what it calls "the world's largest spike", 13 feet high, in Spike Park. The Village says it erected the spike in 1992, "measuring 13 feet high and 15 inches wide", and that the Village developed "Spike Park".
The Village says Hines Creek is known as the "End of Steel" because it was historically the furthest point north and west that the Canadian National Railway reached across the prairies. Mighty Peace Tourism tells the story this way: when the Second World War broke out, construction on the railroad in northern Alberta halted at Hines Creek, and the line sat unfinished until well after the war was over, though it has long since been completed. After the war, the town became known as "the end of steel", a name it has kept ever since.
