FIELD GUIDE
The story
A giant star wheel on a concrete platform beside a Wheatbelt lake, put there so people can find their way around the sky.
A planisphere is a simple and rather beautiful instrument: two discs, one printed with the stars, the other with a window and a date-and-time scale, rotated against each other to show exactly what is above you at a given moment. It is centuries-old technology and it still works better than most apps for learning constellations, because it shows the whole sky at once.

WHAT TO EXPECT
The Giant Planisphere is a current public astrotourism feature at the Lake Yealering Observing Site. Shire of Wickepin planning records document the concrete viewing platform, Giant Planisphere and Stargazing for Beginners signage, the Shire’s 2026 Growth Strategy still lists the installation, and current Trails WA material directs visitors to Lake Yealering as a Giant Planisphere stop.
ACCESS
Lake Yealering is an established public stargazing/visitor destination and the planisphere is intended for visitor use. The stored coordinate remains only a coarse foreshore reference rather than a surveyed planisphere or parking pin. Direct navigation is withheld until a specific observing-site/vehicle-arrival coordinate is independently map-checked.
