FIELD GUIDE
The story
The 2024 Floriade theme was Art in Bloom, and somebody took it literally: a towering paintbrush, mounted on a slant as an artist would hold it, standing in a palette made of flowers.
Natureworks built it – the Queensland fabricator responsible for a large share of Australia's Big Things, whose own account of the job records that being asked to create a giant paintbrush made their eyes light up. The construction is a good window into how these objects are actually made now. Starting from the client's brief and site references, the team produced sketches and CAD drawings for approval, sculpted the handle from polystyrene, and separately prototyped and laser-cut the curved acrylic bristles, wiring them internally for light.
