FIELD GUIDE
The story
It was built to be filmed, not to be kept.
The Giant Murray Cod beside Swan Hill railway station started as a film prop and was afterwards adopted as a permanent town icon – a route into the catalogue shared by almost nothing else here. Parade floats are common origins; the Baxter shoe and the Loxton pelican both came off trailers. A movie prop is rarer, and it means the object was designed for a camera angle rather than for a driver's eye or a lifetime outdoors.
Current Swan Hill planning and tourism material continues to feature it as a prominent visitor landmark, so the adoption has held for decades.
The fish deserves it. Murray cod are the largest freshwater fish in Australia – historically recorded well over a metre and a half and beyond a hundred pounds, long-lived, ambush predators sitting under snags in the Murray-Darling. They are also a threatened species now, having declined badly through river regulation, cold-water releases from dams and the loss of the timber they shelter under.
Swan Hill sits on the Murray itself, and a giant cod at the railway station is the town naming its river.
The Adaminaby trout carries a comparable weight of local meaning; the cod carries more, because it is native and in trouble rather than introduced and thriving.
The film it was made for, the maker, the dimensions and the date are not recorded.

ACCESS
The Giant Murray Cod stands at 139 Curlewis Street beside Swan Hill railway station. Swan Hill Rural City Council names this the "Curlewis Street car park (next to the Giant Murray Cod)", a free public car park entered from the Murray Valley Highway and home to an Evie DC fast charger; park there and approach on foot. This is distinct from the separate ticketed CBD car park behind the Campbell Street shops.
