FIELD GUIDE
The story
A roll of Pep-O-Mint Life Savers stands in Gouverneur, northern New York, because the candy's best-known businessman was born in the town. North Country Public Radio described it in 2011 as hanging above the village green, longer than a car and shorter than a limo, with its foil wrapper open at one end. It is one of the giant roll replicas from the Life Savers factory in Port Chester, which the Gouverneur Museum says operated from 1920 to 1985 before being converted to condominiums. When the company offered one to Gouverneur, hometown of Edward John Noble (1882 to 1958), the village accepted. NCPR reported that the town historian does not credit Noble with inventing the candy, but with naming it and devising its marketing; Noble bought out its inventor, Clarence Crane, for $2,900. According to the museum, the Gouverneur Rotary Club erected the roll on 10 November 1987. A former mayor, in a letter the museum reproduces dated 2021, recalled that Gouverneur Iron Works built a tower for it. Not everyone welcomed the spot: NCPR said some residents grumbled that it belonged beside the hospital that bears Noble's name, while a Rotary member argued that a community has to advertise itself. The roll remains a feature of the park. I Love NY, the state tourism site, updated its listing in September 2025 with the Village Park address of 30 E. Main St., and the Gouverneur Chamber's 2026 site calls it always a conversation starter.
