The story
Eketāhuna built a six-and-a-half-metre kiwi to be noticed, and it worked.
Te Ara records the giant kiwi as part of the town's deliberate effort to attract attention – a small Wairarapa settlement on State Highway 2 that decided the answer to being passed through was to put up something impossible to miss. The town promotes itself as Real Kiwi Country, and its current visitor material simply encourages people to take a selfie with the bird.
The name carries some weight. Eketāhuna has long occupied a particular place in New Zealand humour as shorthand for the remote small town – the place at the end of everything, invoked in phrases about what the average person in Eketāhuna thinks. A town with that reputation building a giant national bird is not just tourism; it is a fairly pointed piece of self-assertion.
A kiwi is also the hardest possible subject to make impressive. The bird is small, brown, flightless, nocturnal and shaped like a rugby ball with a beak. Almost nobody has seen one in the wild. Enlarging it to six and a half metres is the only way to make it monumental, and the scale does something the animal itself never can.
That is arguably the strongest argument for the whole tradition. The kiwi is on the currency, the coat of arms and the name New Zealanders call themselves, and it takes a giant fibreglass one beside a highway in the Wairarapa to actually make people stop and look at the shape of it.

Eketāhuna’s current community/visitor site explicitly encourages visitors to take selfies with the Giant Kiwi. Te Ara records the principal kiwi as 6.5 metres high and part of the town’s visitor rebranding.
