FIELD GUIDE
The story
The giant ice cream cone outside the Mesnier school in Affton began life as an advertisement. According to the Affton-Lemay Chamber of Commerce, it marked the Velvet Freeze ice cream store at Gravois and Weber roads. The Velvet Freeze company was founded in 1934, and the chamber says this sign was fabricated of fibreglass about 1942. The St. Louis Jewish Light described the cone in 2021 as an 18-foot fibreglass double-dip cone.
The Affton Fire Department restored the cone, the chamber's history of Affton records, and it now stands in front of the school. The chamber's visitors' guide says the Affton School District acquired it in 1992 with the chamber's help.
