FIELD GUIDE
The story
AVAM describes a golden hand that appears to hold up a movie screen on the side of the museum's Jim Rouse Visionary Center. According to the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM), Adam Kurtzman's 11-foot Giant Golden Hand and a 32-foot outdoor screen were installed on the large wall of the center, which was dedicated in fall 2004. The hand gives the illusion of holding the screen between its fingers, and AVAM says it is seen as a "Divine Hand" supporting the public screenings.
The wall faces the grassy slope of Federal Hill Park, which AVAM says can easily seat more than 1,000 people. Its Flicks from the Hill family film series began there in summer 2005 with support from the Hughes Family. The series continues: Visit Baltimore lists four free Thursday screenings in July 2026, shown outdoors on the Federal Hill side of the building. In 2025 the films moved indoors during sidewalk repairs at the park, Baltimore Fishbowl reported.
