FIELD GUIDE

The story

Among the many oversized objects of Casey, Illinois, this is the one for crafters: a crochet hook 6 feet 1.5 inches long, shown with a pair of giant knitting needles. Guinness World Records, writing in 2016, credited a local businessman with leading the construction of the hook, the needles and other oversized pieces that put the small town on the record books. A 2017 feature gave its weight as nine pounds. The record has since moved on: Guinness World Records now lists the largest crochet hook as 2.77 metres (9 ft 1 in), measured in Colchester, UK, on 11 December 2017. The town's own list of its big things, as it stood in June 2026, calls the needles and hook the 'former' world's largest and places them outside 2 E. Main St. Casey has many other oversized objects nearby.
