FIELD GUIDE
The story
Taupō has more oversized objects than a town its size ought to, and the bicycle is the one that explains the most about the place.
The sculpture stands about three metres high and dates from the early 2010s. That timing is not incidental. Taupō has spent the past two decades building an identity as one of New Zealand's serious endurance-sport towns – the lake circuit is a long-established cycling event, the region hosts Ironman-scale triathlon, and the mountain-bike trails through the surrounding forest have drawn riders from well beyond the North Island. The bicycle is the town flagging that to people arriving by car.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Current New Zealand Big Things coverage continues to document the three-metre Giant Bicycle in Taupō. The sculpture dates from the early 2010s and remains part of Taupō’s oversized-landmark cluster.
ACCESS
The Giant Bicycle is at Control Gates Hill by the Wairakei Drive / Poihipi Road junction. Official Taupō tourism directs visitors to park at the public car park at the top of Control Gates Hill on Wairakei Drive, establishing a lawful visitor arrival context. PBT still withholds direct navigation until that car park is independently pinned and map-checked.
