FIELD GUIDE
The story
A space-age giant that stood outside a Route 66 drive-in for decades was nearly lost when the restaurant closed, and now stands in a city park. The Gemini Giant is a custom Muffler Man-type fiberglass figure with an astronaut-style helmet who holds a silver rocket instead of a muffler. Enjoy Illinois says he is named for the Gemini space program and gives his height as 30 feet; Route 66 News called him 28 feet tall in 2024.
Route 66 News reports that the Launching Pad Drive-In began in 1960 as a Dairy Delite, was renamed in 1965 after an expansion, and received the giant that year after its original owner saw a Muffler Man at a restaurant convention. The Chicago Sun-Times dates the figure's arrival to 1964. The restaurant and giant entered the Illinois Route 66 Hall of Fame in 2000, but the restaurant later closed.
