The story

Along Interstate 94 in western North Dakota, a flock of Canadian geese 110 feet tall rises beside the road at exit 72. Geese in Flight is the opening sculpture of the Enchanted Highway, a 32-mile route of oversized scrap-metal figures leading south to the town of Regent, made by local artist Gary Greff. According to the Enchanted Highway's own site, Greff began building the series in 1989 to revive his hometown after decades of population and economic decline. The site gives the geese as erected in 2001, 154 feet long and 110 feet tall, made from oil tanks and oil well pipe and weighing over 78.8 tons. Guinness World Records lists the work, completed in August 2001, at 157,659 lb (about 71.5 tonnes) and as the largest scrap-metal sculpture; the Enchanted Highway site dates the record to 2002. Getting to the geese has not always been simple. In January 2018 the Bismarck Tribune reported that, since the previous summer, new landowners had closed public access to the sculpture in a dispute over liability and Greff's lease, and in April 2019 the Associated Press reported that the landowners and the sculptor had resolved it. In March 2025 The Dickinson Press reported that the Enchanted Highway Foundation, founded in 2023, was working to preserve and expand Greff's sculptures. A July 2025 report describes the access road as lined with 200 smaller geese, and a travel blog updated in October 2026 mentions a picnic table sheltered from the sun at the site. It is the first stop on the Enchanted Highway, which continues south to Regent.
