FIELD GUIDE
The story
Drivers on Interstate 85 in northern South Carolina pass a water tower shaped like a giant peach, and the town of Gaffney has made it its landmark. The Peachoid is 135 feet tall, according to the Post and Courier, and a 2026 WorldAtlas travel feature says it holds a million gallons of water. The South Carolina Picture Project says it was built in 1981 over a period of five months and can be seen between exits 90 and 92.
The South Carolina Picture Project credits the idea to Jack Millwood, a member of the Gaffney Board of Public Works, when the area needed an elevated tank: "Let’s build it in the shape of a peach!" The project notes that Georgia calls itself the Peach State, while South Carolina out-produces it. The tower has a cleft, a stem and a seven-ton leaf; WorldAtlas gives the leaf as 60 feet and adds that locals cheerfully admit the cleft resembles a rear end.
