FIELD GUIDE

The story

St. Robert's Freedom Rock is a painted limestone slab in the city's military tribute display, between Interstate 44 and St. Robert Boulevard, in what the Pulaski County Tourism Bureau calls the "Gateway to Fort Leonard Wood". It was announced in 2017 as the third Freedom Rock in Missouri, part of a series by artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II that began when he covered graffiti on a rock beside a highway near Greenfield, Iowa, with a mural thanking veterans.
According to the tourism bureau in 2017, the slab was quarried at Laquey in Pulaski County and measures 9 feet by 10 feet at its widest point; its current visitor page gives 12 feet by 10. It is set in concrete under a protective structure. Sorensen said the porous limestone would give it a different look from the granite he often paints.
