This Big Thing is recorded as still being here.
A red-and-white fiberglass and steel bull statue, about 11 feet tall and weighing almost a ton according to the Winston-Salem Journal, stands beside Fratellis Italian Steakhouse at 2000 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, on the site of the former Staley's Charcoal Steak House (1957-2003). The restaurant's owners bought it in December 2019 from Thrift Way Meats and Produce, where it had stood on steel poles as a sign, and installed it in January 2020. The Journal first reported it as the original Staley's bull; a Clemmons Courier column said the next day that the original's owner came forward and called it a case of mistaken identity.

FIELD GUIDE

The story

The bull outside Fratellis Italian Steakhouse resembles the mascot of the Staley's Charcoal Steak House that once stood on the same site, but it is not that bull.
The Winston-Salem Journal described the statue in 2020 as fiberglass and steel, 11 feet tall, 21 feet long and about 2,000 pounds. It stands in the parking lot next to the restaurant at 2000 Reynolda Road, which opened in 2013. The site had earlier belonged to Staley's Charcoal Steak House, which the Journal says closed in 2003 and whose mascot was a bull made by Sculptured Advertising, a company in Sparta, Wisconsin. The Journal says that bull was made in 1957. A local-history blog instead reports a Staley's steer, 1,800 pounds and 11 feet high, arriving from Sparta around June 1967, and says it was later called Winston. The sources do not reconcile the two dates.
