A 30-foot-tall Art Deco-style sculptural gazebo, officially the Hollywood and La Brea Gateway, stands on a traffic island at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. Created by production designer/director Catherine Hardwicke and dedicated February 1, 1994, the gateway is held aloft on the heads of four caryatid-style figures depicting trailblazing women of color from Hollywood's Golden Age -- Mae West, Dorothy Dandridge, Anna May Wong, and Dolores Del Rio -- giving the piece its popular name, the 'Four Ladies of Hollywood.' A fifth figure, Marilyn Monroe in her famous billowing-skirt pose, originally topped the spire but was stolen in June 2019.
