FIELD GUIDE
The story
A very large piece of cutlery stands in the countryside outside Franklin, Kentucky. Kentucky Living described it in 2022 as a 21-foot-tall stainless steel eating utensil rising above the rural landscape, weighing 680 pounds. The magazine reported that it was constructed and installed in 2018 by Franklin-Simpson High School's senior welding students under teacher Jeremy Loveall. The idea began as a play on the road idiom. Amy Ellis, executive director of the Franklin-Simpson County Tourism Commission, told the magazine: "I think it was just a pun at first." Other class projects followed. Kentucky Living reported that a 24-foot butter knife called The Cutting Edge, built in 2021, was the first piece of art installed in Franklin's Blackjack Sculpture Park. The article calls it the world's largest, and gives its weight as 1,000 pounds in the text and 24,000 pounds in a photo caption. A WBKO report in December 2025 on the welding class lists the knife, Fork in the Road, a space capsule and other sculptures among the projects displayed across Franklin.
