FIELD GUIDE

The story

A 30-foot-tall human eye gazes over Main Street in downtown Dallas, and has done since 2013. Eye is a sculpture by Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset, made of fiberglass, resin and steel and modelled on his own eye. The Joule hotel says it was commissioned for the Chicago Loop Alliance's Art Loop programme and made its debut in Chicago's Pritzker Park in 2010, arriving in Dallas three years later. KERA reported in 2021 that Tasset made it in 2007, so the date of the piece itself depends on the account.
CultureMap reported in 2013 that Headington Companies, the developer of the Joule, had acquired the work and that it was coming to Dallas with help from the Nasher Sculpture Center, to be shown indefinitely. The lot sits across Main Street from the hotel; KERA gives the address as 1601 Main Street, CultureMap as 1607. KERA also reported that the site once held the Praetorian Building, reportedly Dallas's first skyscraper, which was demolished in 2012.
