FIELD GUIDE
The story
Erik the Viking is a fiberglass statue more than 20 feet tall that stands in front of Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary and Junior High School in Nauvoo, Illinois. WGEM reported in August 2024 that he has been there since 1996 as the school's mascot. A windstorm during the June 2023 derecho blew him down, and repairs costing about $13,000, paid with insurance money, put him back for the start of the 2024 school year. Superintendent and principal Mark Scott said he took six or seven phone calls about him that first week, and called Erik "kind of a big deal around here".
