'El Rey,' a full-scale stone replica of 'San Lorenzo Monument 1,' one of the colossal Olmec heads discovered at the ancient Mesoamerican site of San Lorenzo, Veracruz, Mexico (original dates 1200-900 BCE, one of only 17 such heads still in existence). The 10-foot-tall, 18-ton replica was sculpted by artist Ignacio Perez Solano and presented as a gift from the Universidad Veracruzana to UT Austin's Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) on November 19, 2008, in recognition of US-Mexico academic ties. It stands in the LLILAS/Benson breezeway at Sid Richardson Hall.
