Johnny Appleseed

Who the figure represents is disputed. Schreckengost made it as Johnny Appleseed; Ohio Outdoor Sculpture quotes him telling the Plain Dealer in a 1980s retrospective, "I made him and I know he's Johnny Appleseed all right." A plaque inside the school instead identifies it as Dr. Jared Potter Kirtland, the botanist, doctor and naturalist who was an early settler of Lakewood, then Rockport, and Cleveland Historical also describes the sculpture as designed to honor him. Ohio Outdoor Sculpture says city officials judged Appleseed an inappropriate image for a school. Ohio Outdoor Sculpture records an inscription on the auditorium wall nearby that reads "Let us sow seeds of culture, of speech, of drama, of song".

In summer 2018, according to the Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation, the sculpture was undergoing restoration as the final project in restoring Schreckengost's Lakewood artworks. WOIO reported that specialists from Vector Corrosion Services and Cleveland's Intermuseum Conservation Association found the steel supports and terra cotta in good structural condition, and the figure was power washed.

WOIO described the sculpture in 2018 as perched above the Lakewood Civic Auditorium, near Franklin Boulevard and Bunts Avenue, and Lakewood City Schools' auditorium page describes it as gracing the building's exterior entrance. Lakewood City Schools says the 2,000-seat auditorium, built for $1.2 million in the mid-1950s, hosts graduations, concerts and theater.
