FIELD GUIDE

The story

Donald Bradman was born at Cootamundra in 1908 and left as a toddler. On that slender thread the town has built an eight-metre cricket bat.
The Big Bat and Stumps stand at Bradman Oval, only metres from his birthplace, and they were erected in 1975 during a burst of oversized construction in the town. Bradman was still alive then, and would be for another twenty-six years; the monument went up while its subject could have driven past and seen it, which is unusual for a memorial of this size.
